  My Thoughts

Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥

*I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.

Royally Flushed by Ainsley St. Claire is the story of Corrine, the executive assistant of Jackson Graham, who was dumped recently by her famous boyfriend on the news, became the target of a crazy person, and developed a passionate romance with her boss. Jackson Graham is a visionary, an eco-entrepreneur trying to create changes in the world; as his assistant life is in threat, he wants to protect her at any cost, so against his better judgment, starts an affair with her. These two individuals must join forces to face some perils at the risk of falling in love.

I appreciated the little mystery incorporated, which felt refreshing in a romance like this. The identity of the culprit surprised me, as some hints dropped here and there that shifted the blame from one person to another. Also, I liked that the author seemed to have researched everything she put in the book, from the environment to the technical aspects featured; I like that she made them look like facts, in case they weren't, to enrich the reader's experience. The best part is that I was invested and liked the author's fluid and easy writing style.

I liked the idea behind this romance, but I didn't feel conscious development of it; it was more sex than love, and that's not enough to make it believable. They had miscommunication issues, never going deeper about their relationship, and their problems were unsolved by the end of the book. Since this is standalone, it's a problem for me.

I’m a character-based reader, as I strongly believe that characters make or break a book; however, this one proved that a good enough narrative has the potential to bypass the many incongruous flaws the leads have.

Corrine is a good girl with defined core values loving her job where she feels she’s doing good for the world. What I didn’t like about her was that it was more telling than showing; I think the author created her nice persona by force to integrate her into the good girl that this story required. As for the man himself, he was nice, chivalrous, and attentive to Corrine's needs, but just like in her case, his actions showed something different from the tales told of him. In his defense, I think it was difficult for him because Corrine was giving him mixed signals. In addition, his actions didn't quite fit with his personality because they seemed so out of place.

Overall, Royally Flushed by Ainsley St. Claire was a steamy romance with cute moments and an intriguing plot, which would have been perfect if the characters were not such a disappointment. The pace is pretty good, as you can read it all at once and feel like you aren't missing a thing. I'm thinking of getting the next book in this series because it seems like a pretty fun read; I just hope the author develops her characters more in the future.

Ainsley St. Claire:

Ainsley St Claire is a Romantic Suspense Author and Adventurer on a lifelong mission to craft sultry storylines and steamy love scenes that captivate her readers. To date, she is best known for her series Venture Capitalists. An avid reader since the age of four, Ainsley’s love of books knew no genre. After reading, came her love of writing, fully immersing herself in the colorful, impassioned world of contemporary romance. Ainsley’s passion immediately shifted to a vocation when during a night of terrible insomnia, her first book came to her. Ultimately, this is what inspired her to take that next big step. The moment she wrote her first story, the rest was history. Currently, Ainsley is in the midst of writing a nine-book series called “Venture Capitalist.” When she isn’t being a bookworm or typing away her next story on her computer, Ainsley enjoys spending quality family time with her loved ones. She is happily married to her amazing soulmate and is a proud mother of two rambunctious boys. She is also a scotch aficionada and lover of good food (especially melt-in-your-mouth, velvety chocolate). Outside of books, family, and food, Ainsley is a professional sports spectator and an equally as terrible golfer and tennis player.
